Mental health experts in Michigan are excited about recent research from Northwestern University, which has developed the first blood test to diagnose depression in teens. According to Lori Edelson, Birmingham Maple Clinic therapist and spokesperson, the latest developments in diagnosing teen depression are an important step in treating the mental illness in young people. Having the ability to diagnose teens who are suffering from major depression early on gives young people a better outlook for their future mental health, as those who dont receive treatment often run into significant mental health issues down the road.

Northwestern's findings are a positive step in the search for more effective treatment for depression in teens, a group that is typically harder to diagnose due to normal mood changes and what is viewed as typical teen behavior. Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and lead investigator of the study Eva Redei, PhD said, Right now depression is treated with a blunt instrument. Its like treating Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes exactly the same way. We need to do better for these kids.
