Schizoaffective disorder is a mental condition that is psychosis combined with a mood disorder. The person with this condition not only has lost touch with reality or real life situations, but also suffers from mood disorders as well.

As with most mental disorders, symptoms can differ from one person to the next. The person may experience psychotic episodes and a mood disorder at the same time, or can exhibit signs of one or the other separately.

What are the manifestations?

- Alterations in appetite and energy - Delusions - Disordered speech - Paranoia - Easily agitated - Unable to care for self - Sleep disturbances - Hallucinations - Inability to focus - Mania - High or low mood

What are the causes?

The cause of schizoaffective disorder is not known. Factors that may contribute include genetics and imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain. It is not as common as schizophrenia and mood conditions, it is more prevalent in women than men, and is rare in children.

Diagnosis:

Your health care professional will need to get a detailed health history and perform a thorough physical examination. Blood work and other testing may also be ordered to rule out other causes for the symptoms. If these tests come back as negative, meaning that no underlying disease processes are evident, your doctor may refer you to a mental health provider for psychiatric testing and treatment.

Commonly question about Schizoaffective Disorder - Symptoms and Treatment

Question :

What would you recommend as treatment for Schizoaffective disorder?

A patient suffers from Schizoaffective Disorder, with symptoms including auditory and visual hallucination, delusions of grandeur, mood disorder (both manic and depressive, someone separately but often simultaneously) and some psychosis. The patient is the bipolar type (as you might have guessed). The patient also suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

What would you consider the best treatment in this case? That is, what would be best in way of medicine (what drugs would you prescribe), psychotherapy, and psychosocial rehabilitation? If you have any personal experience with this condition, then don t be afraid to share even if your symptoms aren t quite the same as the ones here - proper understanding, I find, is always best.

Thank you!
Answer :
People with schizoaffective disorder generally respond best to a combination of medications and counseling. Treatment varies depending on the type and severity of symptoms, and whether the disorder is depressive-type or bipolar-type.

In general, doctors prescribe medications to relieve psychotic symptoms, stabilize mood and treat depression. The only medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of schizoaffective disorder is the antipsychotic drug paliperidone (Invega). However, a number of medications approved for the treatment of other mental health conditions also may be helpful for schizoaffective disorder.

In addition, psychotherapy can help normalize thought patterns, teach social skills and reduce social isolation.

Medications used to treat schizoaffective disorder may include:

Antipsychotics. Also called neuroleptics, doctors prescribe these medications to treat psychotic symptoms, such as delusions, paranoia and hallucinations. In addition to paliperidone (Invega), other antipsychotic medications that may be prescribed include clozapine (Clozaril, FazaClo), risperidone (Risperdal) and olanzapine (Zyprexa) Mood-stabilizing medications. When the schizoaffective disorder is bipolar-type, mood stabilizers can level out the highs and lows of bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression. People with bipolar disorder have episodes of mania and depressed mood. Examples of mood stabilizers include lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid) and divalproex (Depakote). Anticonvulsants such as carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol, others) and valproat Depacon) also may be used for their mood-stabilizing properties
Antidepressants. When depression is the underlying mood disorder, antidepressants can treat feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or difficulty with sleep and concentration. Common medications include citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozac) and escitalopram (Lexapro).

Nonmedication therapy may include:

Psychotherapy and counseling. Building a trusting relationship in therapy can help people with schizoaffective disorder better understand their condition and feel hopeful about their future. Effective sessions focus on real-life plans, problems and relationships. New skills and behaviors specific to settings such as the home or workplace also may be introduced.
Family or group therapy. Treatment can be more effective when people with schizoaffective disorder are able to discuss their real-life problems with others. Supportive group settings can also help decrease social isolation and provide a reality check during periods of psychosis.

In general, people with schizoaffective disorder have a better prognosis than people with schizophrenia, but not as good as people with mood disorders only. Long-term treatment is necessary, and the prognosis varies from person to person.

Question :

Which nutritional supplements are most effective for Asperger s Disorder and Schizoaffective Disorder?

I have two mental conditions.I have symptoms of Asperger s Disorder and symptoms of Schizoaffective Disorder. I really prefer the holistic approach to treating my mental disorders. However, my neuropsychologist says that these conditions typically need prescription drugs and that nutritional supplements will not be enough. I can include nutritional supplements in my treatment plan, but she said I might need the prescription drugs also. So, My question is what nutritional supplements can I use that are effective in helping or treating my mental conditions?
Answer :
I wouldn t suggest supplements. In my opinion, there are very few that really do that much. But before you try medications, I would suggest trying a gluten free diet. There are several studies that have shown improvement in the symptoms of schizophrenic patients. Also, the studies of it s effect on autism spectrum disorders are mixed, but they have found that there are significantly higher numbers of celiac disease (gluten intolerance) in people with autism and aspergers. So your chances are pretty good that a gluten free diet will help you.
